Once Upon A Time...
My life was once all about Southern California beaches, fast cars, and tan blondes. In that order.
Then life flipped. I got married. Speed forward twenty years, I got divorced. In 2008, I moved to Columbus, New Mexico to join the family business: Martha's Place Hotel.
I did not arrive here with some grand corporate lodging plan. I arrived here because life brought me to the desert — and the desert started working on me.

Martha's Place & The Family Hotel Legacy
 Martha
was my mother, and Martha's Place was her home and hotel where she
reigned for about 30 years.
In 2015, Martha sold the hotel to her brother and retired in my care.
She passed in October 2018. God rest her soul.
After that, there I was in Columbus, New Mexico asking myself the same
question a lot of people ask when they first arrive here:
"Now what?"

How The Hole Became A Getaway
Little did I know that my developing passion for working on my home and property on the outskirts of the village would eventually come around full circle with the opening of Hole in the Wall Getaway.
It is my home — and my hotel. Sort of.
I call it my Hole-Tel.
Through Airbnb, Booking.com, VRBO, and direct bookings, I get to share my home and the Columbus experience with travelers who, for whatever reason, find themselves my temporary roommate
in the middle of nowhere.

The Hole Property
The Getaway sits on 1.25 acres in Pershing Heights on the northern edge of Columbus, named after General "Black Jack" Pershing, who led the 1916 Punitive Expedition after Francisco "Pancho" Villa raided Columbus

The home is surrounded by a block wall that gives guests privacy and creates a comfortable barrier between your stay and the desert thorns, stickers, cactus, critters, and wide-open Bootheel country.
From the property, guests enjoy sunrise and sunset views, with the city lights of Palomas, Mexico illuminating the southern horizon at night.

Available services may include cooked meals, kitchen cleaning, house cleaning, laundry service, driving, escort to Pink Store shopping and dining in Palomas, outdoor sleep-under-the-stars setup, fire pit fuel, and other special requests arranged in advance.

Good To Know
A valid ID is required for check-in. If you plan to visit Palomas, Mexico, bring the proper ID or passport for border crossing. After making a reservation, please text your name so I can save your number and help with arrival details.

This Is Not A Chain Hotel
The Hole in the Wall Getaway is personal. It has history, desert dust, family roots, oddball humor, and a host who actually cares whether you understand where you are and how to enjoy it.
Kick your boots off and accept the soothe, traveler.
Sense of humor recommended. It goes a long way at The Hole.

A Few Things You Oughta Know

Adults Only
The Getaway is desert property and is not suited for children. There is no childproofing, and the property includes cactus, thorns, wildlife, and desert critters.

Pet Policy
Hunting dogs are welcome outside the rental wall in kennels or cages. Family pets are not allowed inside the walls.
Why? Because not all my guests want to experience their essence. |
Plan Ahead
Fresh groceries are limited in Columbus. If you need groceries, buy them on your way in from Deming or El Paso. Columbus does have
a Family Dollar, Dollar General and a very small Mom&Pop grocery store.
